The DVD Legacy

by Doug

As my sons grow older and I see the television shows that shape them (just as the shows of my childhood shaped me) I am concerned. I know that there are still good shows on Nickelodeon like “Kung Fu Panda“, “Avatar“, and even “The Fairly Odd Parents“. But, the shows that dominate the air time (at least in our family’s prime-time) are shows like “iCarly“, “Victorious“, and “Big Time Rush” (I added links so you can check them out if you aren’t up-to-date with the new Nick shows).

I recently read through an AMA on reddit.com by Michael C. Maronna from “the Adventures of Pete and Pete” and thought “No one is ever going to care about an AMA by a girl from iCarly in 20 years.” Pete and Pete is in a totally different league from that fluff. There is such a major disconnect from “Salute Your Shorts” to “Drake and Josh”. So I decided to make a short list of DVDs I’ll be giving my sons as they age. They will not be just a gift, but an experience we will share every night before bedtime. So that I can pass on not just my legacy, but also my inside jokes.

These will obviously not all come at the same time, but will be spread out through an age-appropriate system:

  • Rugrats
  • Talespin
  • Rescue Rangers
  • Duck Tales
  • Doug
  • Salute Your Shorts
  • the Secret World of Alex Mack
  • Rocko’s Modern Life
  • Boy Meets World
  • the Adventures of Pete and Pete
  • Are You Afraid of the Dark?
  • Saved by the Bell
I know it seems like a ton of stuff to get through, but it really isn’t. It will be just like when we read books. But instead of asking me for one more chapter they’ll say “Please Daddy! Just one more episode! I want to see if Zack gets his summer job back.” Oh the joyful times we will have!
