Stop Picking On Valentine’s Day!
Nearly every Tweet and Facebook post I have seen in the past couple days relating to Valentine’s Day, is about how awful it is. How it’s just a commercial holiday, thought up by big corporations to drain your money. How, you don’t need one day a year to tell the person you care about how you feel about them. Shut-up. No. Really.
It sounds like a pretty good excuse to not have to do anything special for somebody (and I’m not just saying that because my significant other’s birthday is on VDay and I have to celebrate on that day, no matter what). By that same logic, we shouldn’t have Thanksgiving, because you don’t need a special day to see your family and be thankful for things. Or Halloween, because we dress up in strange costumes and eat candy all the time (just me?).
What is the divorce rate in this country? Fifty percent? If you’re such an amazing partner, what’s the trouble with being even better one day out of the year?
I find the other excuse, about how it’s a corporate holiday, pretty weak too. The only reason they make money off of us is because it is so much more convenient to buy a card and a gift for someone, than to put time and effort. I get it. You’re busy. So, what’s the problem with having one day put aside to spend time with your special someone? No money spent, just write your feelings on a napkin and cook them a nice meal (or text them and make them a Hot Pocket…it’s the though right?).
Maybe it’s the Saint aspect you have a problem with? It’s kind of tied to Christianity or Catholicism, and that’s not your thing. No problem! Valentine’s Day is also connected to older pagan fertility rituals that occurred this time of year, like Lupercalia (Horny Werewolf Day).
Still not into it? I understand, it’s not for everybody. Enjoy your cynicism. Today you can look over to the one you love and knowingly smirk, content that lots of people are doing a little something special for someone they love…but not you.
