What You Shouldn’t Miss This Week 03/05/12

by Jeremy

cover to Season One DVD of Game of Thrones

Another week and we bring you more exciting new releases from the worlds of video games, movies and comic books! This week includes Mass Effect 3, another spin-off from Vertigo’s Fables comic book and the complete first season of Game of Thrones on DVD!

The long-awaited final chapter to the Mass Effect trilogy hits stores on March 6th (for PC, Xbox360 and PS3). I know how excited everyone is to finish Commander Shepard’s story, so excited in fact that there have been reports of pirated versions hitting torrent sites over the weekend!

Also out on March 6th, Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season on DVD. The first book from George R.R. Martin’s fantasy saga A Song of Fire and Ice hits the small screen in the series’ first season complete with extras including audio commentaries and character profiles.

In a world where I consider spin-offs  a four letter word, here’s one that won’t piss you off. Vertigo’s Fairest #1 hits comic book racks on March 7th, starring the females of the award-winning Fables series: “Balancing horror, humor and adventure, FAIREST explores the secret histories of Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Snow Queen, Thumbelina, Snow White, Rose Red and others.”

On March 9th John Carter will open in theaters nation wide. Some people call it an Avatar rip off, I call them stupid because Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote this over 100 years ago, and it has appeared in multiple forms of media, including comic books. If Disney plays their cards right, this could be a massive film series, considering their were 11 volumes in the Barsoom series.

If you get a chance to check any of these out or we forgot something; let us know in the comments section, or on Twitter!

What You Shouldn’t Miss This Week 02/13/12

movie poster for The Rum Diary

Last week we had some great picks, and this week looks the same as we point you in the direction of what new stuff we think you shouldn’t miss.

The Rum Diary comes out on DVD and BluRay February 14th. Just in time for Valentine’s Day (that’s not really significant) is the film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s first novel. Johnny Depp plays the lead character, journalist Paul Kemp, as he moves from Eisenhower-Era New York to Puerto Rico to write for a local paper there. Even on the easy-going island he manages to find corruption that he has the chance to blow the whistle on. I am a huge Hunter S. Thompson fan, so I will be picking this up  since I didn’t get to see it in the theater.

The Misadventures of Adam West #1 hits your local comic book shop on February 15th. Fueled by his imagination (and a magical amulet), Adam West continues his travels through time, space, and alternate realities fighting evil-doers in his very own ongoing series. I have no idea what our obsession is with the original TV Batman, but whether he’s the mayor of Quahog or fighting evil in his own comic book, I’m there.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance plays in theaters February 17th. Nicolas Cage returns to the role of Johnny Blaze in the sequel that appears to have taken a darker tone than the original. The effects look great, Ghostrider looks pretty intense…he pees flames.

As always, if we missed something or when you check these out let us know what you thought in the comments below, or by hitting us up on Twitter.

What You Shouldn’t Miss This Week – 02/06/12

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

It is the beginning of the week, so it is time for our rundown on what is coming out this week in the geek world of movies, comic books, television and video games.

Gotham City Impostors finally makes its way to a PC, XBOX 36o or PS3 near you, February 7th (on PC and Playstation Americas, Feb. 8th on XBOX360 and Playstation everywhere else). It will be available as a download, and I will be first in line, getting my fake Batmen (or Jokerz) First-Person-Shoot on (as we mentioned in an earlier post). Did I mention it was only $15?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 1: Change is Constant collects the first six issues of the new TMNT comic series. The all new stories are a throw back to how the turtles originally appear in the comics, and include a new origin story. It’s written by Tom Waltz, Dan Duncan and original co-creator Kevin Eastman.

Severed #7 comes out on February 8th from Image Comics. The horror comic from Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire, Swampthing), Scott Tuft and art from Attila Futaki concludes Wednesday. So far it has been a great book that conjures up old school horror, it goes light (compared to most modern comic books) on the gore, and heavy on the type of tone and anticipation that can make these stories classics. Interestingly, this issue was previously advertised as the last one, but a Facebook post this morning called it the end of the first arc. We can only hope that Snyder has more in store for us.

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 3D is out in theaters on February 10th. As you may have seen us start to write about recently (and you will see more on that), again the Star Wars films will be making their way into theaters, now in 3D. Is it worth the money?

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (also in 3D) hits the theaters on February 10th as well. Why is it on this list? Well, just because it is based (quite loosely) on a Jules Verne book. Yes, he wrote The Mysterious Island as a sequel, but it wasn’t to Journey to the Center of the Earth. It was actually a sequel to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and In Search of The Castaways. Really this is just here so that if you see this movie, you will not hate Jules Verne’s writing anymore than you might have after seeing the first “Journey” movie. He’s dead, he can’t control what The Rock does in his name.

What You Shouldn’t Miss This Week – 01/30/12

The Cover to Fatale #2 by Ed Brubaker

It is that time of week, where we save you time by telling you what you absolutely can’t miss this week in the Geek world of comics, television, movies and of course, video games.

Chronicle is a new movie hitting theaters February 3rd. It is another super hero movie, but it doesn’t look like another super hero movie. It has that handheld camera look that we got with Cloverfield and The Blair With Project. Let’s look at the trailer that gives us a little, but not too much.

Fatale #2 comes out February 1st from Image Comics. It’ is the continuation of the Horror/Noir story from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. I picked up the first issue, because of the hype surrounding it, and I was not disappointed, Marvel and DC Comics have even more competition from the other guys.

Final Fantasy XIII – 2 from Square Enix comes out January 31st. It’s the much-anticipated, sequel to the 2009 hit. It picks up three years after the Final Fantasy XIII, with the previous main character (Lightning) missing, and the search for her as the main plot. If you can pull yourself away from SkyRim, this might be worth checking out.

Hey Dude – Season 2 comes out January 31st on double disc. If you watched Nickelodeon during the 90′s, then remember this show, and its very strange premise: it was basically Salute Your Shorts, the cowboy version.

The Woman In Black comes out February 3rd. Daniel Radcliffe stars in a remake of the 1989 horror TV movie of the same name. Looks like he’s ready to get away from the wizard world as fast as possible, with this movie that has the same visual tone as The Others.

If we forgot something, or you really enjoyed one of these (or if you really didn’t), leave a comment here or on Twitter!

What You Shouldn’t Miss This Week – 01/23/12 – Transformers, Real Steel, Touch

by Jeremy

Bumblebee and Friends

I know your time is just as valuable and limited as mine. There is hardly enough time in the day to watch, play and read as many things as you want. We’re going to make it easier for you by highlighting some of the cool (and of course geeky) stuff you shouldn’t miss this week.

Transformers- Robots in Disguise #1 from IDW Publishing comes out 01/25/12. Whether you followed them as a kid, just saw the movies, or watched the old, weird Beastwars CGI cartoon, this is a great jumping on point. It follows Bumblebee and the Autobots after the war for Cybertron. Unfortunately, Optimus Prime appears to be dead again.

Real Steel on DVD and Blu-Ray comes out 01/24/12. If you need to see Hugh Jackman as something besides Wolverine (for some reason), check him out in this robot-laden future that looks a lot happier than any of the Terminator or Matrix movies (or Bladerunner). It also reminds me of Robot Jox!

Touch will be airing it’s first episode on Fox on 01/25/12. Remember to set your TiVo to record the new show from Tim Kring, the creator of NBC’s Heroes. It has Kiefer Sutherland trying to connect with his emotional troubled son who communicates with numbers rather than words. In doing so, he finds out that everything and everyone is connected. It sounds very The DaVinci Code meets Buddhism.
